Saturday 1 December 2012

This isn't the first day of primary school, but it is the earliest memory of school that I have.

   Hey David,
What time is it?
The teacher asks me.
I didn't know how to respond,
I was not taught how to speak in English.
Though i understood the question,
I didn't know how to respond.
My six year old brain,
brightened like a light bulb,
I knew how I can answer the question!
I grabbed my teacher's hand,
And dragged her over,
Then I raised my hand,
And pointed at the clock.

Proverb Poem

 "Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely"

Kings and Queens,
Five centuries ago,
Absolute control,
Undeniable power,
Do what they want,
Whenever they want.
Chinese emperors,
Start dynasties glorious,
Just, incredibly generours,
Caring about their people.
As more emperors come and go,
They get used to
Their infinite power,
It's as if they
Are supposed to be rich.
Monarchs of countries,
Become incredibly pompous,
Bombastic, and arrogant.
They sleep and spend,
Corrupted by power,
Surrounded and deafened by money,
They become the reason,
For the kingdom's demise.

The Oldest Person I Know

 My Grandfather

The oldest person I know personally is my grandfather on my mother's side. My grandfather lives in an apartment with one of my uncles in Kaoxiong, Taiwan. Right now, he is around 90 years old, and is the only living grandparent I have. The first time I met him that I can remember was when I was around four years old. My mother put me on his lap and let him play with me. At that time, his hair hasn't completely turned white and there wasn't as many wrinkles on his face. However, he still has the same warm, kind and loving look in his eyes as today. I also remember not understanding what he said because he has an accent on his mandarin.

My grandfather used to be a soldier from China, but because of the Chinese Revolution, he was forced to move here. Because of this, he lives a very organized and orderly life. Even though he walks with a humped back, he continues to maintain a daily routine of going out to walk every morning. He also follows many Chinese customs, like how he wants everyone in the family to be present at mealtimes, even if you're not hungry. When I think of my grandfather, I always remember the delicious smells of New Year's dinner. Dumplings, delicious fresh veggies, and savory meats and Taiwanese sausages are always present. He also connotes the brilliant and vibrant sparks that explodes from the firecrackers we light on New Year's Eve.

Although there isn't much to talk about between my grandfather and I, but family is family, so I know he loves me and he knows that I love him. There wasn't a lot of time to be with him when I was younger because my dad's work caused us to move around a lot. This is even truer now, because we live half-way around the world from each other. I wish, no, I know that he will stay healthy and I wish him the best in the rest of his life.

Sedentary VS Active

Am I a sedentary person or an active person?

Truthfully, I am a sedentary person. Given the choice, I would rather stay at home and read a book or browse the internet with a hot drink by my side. This, however, does not mean I do not like to go outside and sweat. I enjoy biking occasionally and I play tennis at least once per week. I also hike with my family once in a while as well. However, a lot of my time is crammed with tutors and other fun stuff. In a perfect world where I would never get tired and have all the time in the day to do whatever I want, of course I would like to go outside and explore the world. One of my dreams that I hopefully be able to fulfill later in life is to travel around the world leisurely and explore different culture and cuisine, but for now, I'm content with comfortably sitting at home reading.
